Apple Pulls iOS 4 Jailbreak Checker

iphone jailbreak 150x150 Apple Pulls iOS 4 Jailbreak CheckerNow that Microsoft’s own new smartphone OS, Windows Phone has been jailbroken, it’s been revealed that Apple has quietly dropped an API from the latest version of it’s own mobile operating system, iOS 4, that checks for jailbroken handsets according to NetworkWorld.

The move comes less than six months after the API was first revealed.  It’s not clear why Apple, which is normally so forceful about its own “walled garden” approach to smartphones, has made such a move or even if this is a temporary or permanent decision.

The best guess as to the withdrawal of the API is that it was found to be incorrectly identifying and disabling phones that had not been jailbroken, though there have been no reports of any such behaviour.  This is a serious risk for any such software though and is no doubt something Microsoft will be acutely aware of.

It goes to demonstrate the difficulties in protecting phones and operating systems from those who want to unlock them and open them up to other software and experiences.  This is a problem that Microsoft will no doubt face in the coming months and what, if anything they decide to do about this situation should it arise for them will remain to be seen.

As always at Windows7News we cannot recommend jailbreaking any smartphone because of the rising risks of malware on the handsets and the fact that it will immediately invalidate your warranty.

Apple have not made a statement about the withdrawal of the API, but we will bring you any further news should it become available.
