It’s not often that Google staff publicly denounce the company’s own products, but that’s exactly what Lead Gmail developer, and the creator of the company’s AdSense technology, Paul Buchheit has said on FriendFeed, as reported by NeoWin.
In his post to the social networking site he declared that “ChromeOS will be killed next year (or ‘merged’ with Android)”, but can he be right?

To be honest Buchheit is probably just expressing the thoughts of a great many people who are wondering why its taken so long to bring Chrome OS to market when the much more complex Android OS has gone through several versions in the same amount of time.
Clearly the Android team are much better at what they do, more adaptive and have more technical skill.
Chrome OS was intended to be the netbook operating system of choice when XP was still being installed onto the devices. The launch of Windows 7 put an end to XP’s dominance and now all netbooks come with Microsoft’s new OS. The final nail in the coffin for Chrome OS was the launch of Apple’s iPad, the popularity of which (and of subsequent tablets such as the Galaxy Tab which runs Android) have directly affected the netbook market in quite a significant way with sales down in recent months.
With Android now the de-facto mobile operating system of choice, would consumers just be confused by another OS release from Google? This is entirely possible and Chrome OS could very easily at this point be consigned to niche products.
That said, until the first Chrome OS devices ship we will have no idea of price and popularity. The technology markets have surprised us all before and it could be too early to write off this netbook OS as it could even rejuvenate the market for these mini laptop computers.
