The ban has been implemented on US troops to stop them downloading media after Private first class Bradley Manning downloaded thousands of files from SIPRNET (the US Department of Defense’s secret files network) and stashed them on a CD labelled Lady Gaga.

The recent move will come as a surprise to many because major corporations too this move some years ago following the sales of sensitive commercial data and publicly detailed incidents of industrial espionage.

Their moves varied from gluing up USB ports and removing optical drives to using the new security policy features in Windows 7 that allow specific user groups to be blocked from using them.

It’s well known that governments and militaries around the world are always hesitant to upgrade their computer operating systems, which is why the age-old Windows for Workgroups became known in the UK as “Windows for Warships”, it was eventually retired by 2009.  Now though with the world facing increasing cyber-attacks, there will no doubt be calls for these governments to utilise the latest security features, such as removable storage blocking in Windows 7, as quickly as possible.

For now the news of this belated policy will come as a shock to some, and perhaps as an opportunity for others.
