Should There Be A Tablet Version Of Windows 7?

Recently some news has cropped up on the web hinting that Microsoft are getting ready to demonstrate the Windows operating system running on a low power ARM processors, mainly used with Tablets at CES in January. Now the question that remains is will they be demonstrating Windows 7? Or Windows 8 on these tablet devices?

The problem with the current Windows 7 OS on tablet devices is that the battery is drained very quickly when compared to the likes of the iPad. Typical Windows 7 tablets only have a battery life of around 2-3 hours at the moment, while the iPad is generally well above 8 hours. Windows 7 has been refined and is known for being more power efficient than its predecessors, but still it is not optimised for tablet devices like Apple’s iOS operating system.

So what can Microsoft do?

If Microsoft do demonstrate Windows 8 running on an ARM based Tablet at CES it will be great, but the only problem is it will kick Microsoft out of the tablet race as Windows 8 isn’t expected for another 2 years at the least. This would leave Microsoft with an awful lot of ground to make up which they will probably never gain. It’s a similar situation to the work they have for themselves now with Windows Phone 7, they should have released it over a year ago when things were only beginning to heat up in the smartphone market, now they’ve been left in the dust of Apple’s iOS platform and Android.tabletconcept 400x240 Should There Be A Tablet Version Of Windows 7?

Maybe the solution for Microsoft is to release a tablet friendly version of Windows 7. Now I know some of you may be getting ready to overwhelm me in the comments reminding me that Windows 7 was optimised to be compatible with touchscreens and tablets. But the truth of the matter is that the full desktop experience is not what users are looking for on tablet devices.

They are looking for a slim-downed dumber version of their desktop, which is simply, quick and easy to use. However it’s still important that they can retain most of the functionality of their desktop. It’s a lot to ask for, but there’s lots of things that could be stripped out of Windows 7 which would save power, space and time on a tablet version of the OS.

Could there be another solution for Microsoft altogether though? Release a completely new OS designed for tablets?

If Microsoft came up with a new Tablet OS which was a cross between Windows 7 and Windows Phone 7 they could be onto a winner, cut out some of the unnecessary Windows 7 stuff and bring in some of the easy the use UI of Windows Phone 7. Of course they would need to do a bit more work on it than that, but I think it’s a reasonable concept.

What do you think?
