There’s good news for the gaming industry as it appears nerds have not been affected by the economic downturn! Nah, I’m just messin’ what ya ;)
The new Cataclysm expansion for the ever popular World of Warcraft PC game has sold more than 3.3 million copies in it’s first day on sale, making it the fastest-selling PC game ever.
The former crown was held by another warcraft expansion, Wrath of the Lich King in 2008 and this expansion still holds the title for overall sales according to the BBC.
The new expansion’s popularity has been helped by the fact that it’s the first Warcraft expansion to also be available to download as well as buy in shops straight from launch day.
“However,” said Chris Poole, Senior Analyst at GFK Chart Track, “it is entirely possible as Activision/Blizzard claim, that Cataclysm could be a record launch for a PC game if you take into account sales through digital downloads.”
Overall, World of Warcraft Cataclysm finished its opening weekend in third place for sales overall, behind Fifa 11 and Call of Duty: Black Ops.
Around 12 million people around the world play World of Warcraft, almost half of which are based in Asia.
